dith and Henri Gout, both graduates of the Montpellier School of Architecture, founded the architectural practice in 1986. Experienced and committed, they have more than 35 years' experience in a variety of fields, including the renovation of heritage housing in town centres and individual homes in the countryside of the Occitanie region.
For more than 15 years, these architects have carried out projects under the Malraux law (a tax exemption law) in the protected areas of Carcassonne, Perpignan and Béziers. These are large, complex projects that require technical knowledge acquired through professional training in heritage architecture and ecological and energy strategies for buildings, supplemented in the field by contact with specialist companies and design offices. In this type of business, they are used to working with the architecture and heritage department (ABF), which issues an opinion on the proposed project.
Single-family homes are an important part of their careers, whether they are contemporary or refurbished. It's a field that requires good communication with the customer, to take account of the occupants' lifestyle, to be able to advise them on adapting the programme to meet the financial budget, and to make them understand what the land and its environment impose as a priority on the construction.
Edith and Henri Gout also design professional premises for the self-employed, including doctors' surgeries, dental surgeries and physiotherapy centres.
The agency operates on the basis of equal numbers of men and women, according to a specific architectural brief. They are highly complementary in their practical approach, and remain open to debate. Henri Gout has a keen interest in geometry and attaches importance to the proportions of spaces, as has been the practice since ancient times, with a search for the best surface/height ratio for interior volumes, and length/width ratio for elevations or surfaces.
These architects strive to evolve in line with new societal codes, and to take account of climatic constraints that reveal an urgent need, without ignoring certain immutable values that are part of the roots of this country.
Henri Gout's mother came from the land, and he was brought up on a wine-growing estate. His knowledge of local tree species and his passion for geometry and the Occitan landscape mean that he can bring his expertise in landscaping and gardens to bear on his architectural projects.
