ATELIER ARTEFACT is available for new projects
Atelier Artefact is an independent architecture practice based in Valence, in the Drôme region, founded by Laurent TABOUR. The practice supports private and professional clients with renovation, transformation, extension and new-build projects, from feasibility studies through to construction supervision.
The practice starts from a simple idea: before designing a building, you need to understand the place and the people who will inhabit it. Orientation, natural light, views, climate, existing structures, uses and budget all provide the foundations from which the project gradually takes shape. Rather than applying a predefined style, Atelier Artefact seeks a response that is specific to each situation.
This approach places particular emphasis on simplicity and materiality. Stone, timber, brick, render, concrete and metal are considered for both their construction qualities and the atmospheres they can create.
The practice favours architecture in which every element has a clear purpose, limiting the multiplication of layers, effects and unnecessary features wherever possible. Natural light, summer comfort, durability and the building's ability to age gracefully are all integral to the design process.
The transformation of existing buildings holds a particularly important place in this approach. Renovation does not necessarily mean erasing what exists and starting again; it also means understanding what deserves to be preserved, revealed or transformed. The constraints of an older building can then become the starting point for contemporary spaces adapted to new uses, while maintaining a connection with their history.
The project is also approached as a process of dialogue. Sketches, drawings, sections, models and 3D visualisations help make design decisions clear and allow the practice to work closely with the client at every stage. Questions of feasibility, cost and construction are considered from the outset, seeking a balance between architectural ambition and practical reality.
Atelier Artefact also advocates a sensitive and measured approach to architecture, designed to be experienced before it is looked at: simple, durable and lived-in spaces, where quality comes as much from space and light as from materials and attention to detail.
